Anime: The Best and Worst of 2014
With another year over, I figured I’d say a few words about anime that came out in the recent year. This post is mainly a summary of memorable anime I’ve seen this year, starting with my favourites!
5: Noragami 7/10
This one didn’t grab my attention right away, but eased me into it after a few episodes. Only had time for a couple of arcs, but good ones at that. In finishing Noragami, you get that feeling that you’d like to see some more. Unfortunately, no second season in sight. It was good while it lasted.
4: Golden Time 8/10
Technically it started in 2013, but since it ended the next year and I watched it all a few months later, I decided to include it on this list. Although the ghost aspect of the anime was a bit unnecessary, Golden Time proved itself to be funny, sentimental, and close to what a real relationship looks like (as close as you get for anime anyway). A romance anime that is worthy of a spot up there with Clannad, Fruits Basket, and Kokoro Connect.
3: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 9/10
Seldom have I seen a comedy that is actually funny. Basing the humour on anime stereotypes and reverse gender roles, it’s refreshing to watch an anime where sexism doesn’t exists and every day is filled with hilarious irony and just joy. Recommended to advanced viewers of anime.
2: Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii 8/10
The World is Still Beautiful revolves around an arranged betrothal between two young, and somewhat lost people. It’s a touching story of two people finding comfort in their shared solitude, and learning to live alongside each other with respect and care. Criticised for it’s contents including a big age gap and a too young main character, I distance myself from these accusations. This anime is great. And really funny (to think that two comedies found their way into my heart in just a year!).
1: Free! Eternal Summer 9/10
Talk about accurately describing teen pressure and stage fright. Free! had me crying by the end, and the last time I followed an anime so religiously must have been back in 2013 when SnK aired. I never thought I’d be one to like Free!, and after the first season I wasn’t crying, but cringing over the over-sentimentality of it all. However, the second season turned me completely around. And it’s not even for the guys in swimsuits.
Kiniro no Corda: Blue♪Sky 1/10
I forced myself through seven episodes hoping it would turn out like its predecessor. It turned out to be probably the worst anime I’ve seen ever.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
Mahouka isn’t necessarily bad per se, just extraordinarily boring.
Kamigami no Asobi 4/10
This one is a joke.
Escha & Logy no Atelier
Dropped two minutes into the second episode. Too painful to watch.
Overhyped: Zankyou no Terror, Mahouka, Sword Art Online 2, Aldnoah.Zero
Noteworthy anime I watched but didn’t air in 2014: Code Geass R2, Kuroko no Basket, Wolf Children, Garden of Words, Shiki.
